Base Launches Basenames for Simplified Onchain Identity on Ethereum
Base, a Layer 2 network developed by Coinbase, is introducing Basenames, enabling users to create human-readable identities on Ethereum using the Ethereum Name Service (ENS) infrastructure.
Bollywood Fever: Base, a Layer 2 network on Ethereum developed by Coinbase, is set to launch Basenames, a new feature allowing users to create human-readable identities through the Ethereum Name Service (ENS) infrastructure. Basenames will enable users to convert their complex hexadecimal addresses into simpler, more recognizable names, establishing a more accessible onchain identity.
According to the official announcement, Basenames will serve as “a core onchain building block,” allowing anyone to establish their identity on Base. Basenames are subnames created under an existing ENS domain, similar to how subdomains function on traditional websites. For example, a user named Bob could register a basename like bob.base.eth.

The launch of Basenames will feature a Dutch auction, where all available names will be listed for users to purchase and claim. The auction will last 36 hours, with the premium fee starting at 100 ETH and gradually decreasing to 0.39 ETH over the first 12 hours, giving users a fair opportunity to secure their desired name. Once the auction concludes, no premium fee will be required to register a name.
Jesse Pollak, the lead for Base, announced the launch on social media platform X, stating, “We’re going to make basenames the easiest way to get started building (or living) onchain.” The launch is scheduled for Tuesday, and it marks a significant step towards simplifying the process of establishing onchain identities for Ethereum users.
With this new feature, Base aims to enhance user experience by making it easier for people to manage their onchain presence and interact with the Ethereum network using memorable and straightforward names.
