A fire broke out on the roof of the San Diego Comic-Con activation for the HBO series “The Penguin,” prompting an evacuation on Friday evening. The alarm was sounded during the press preview for the event, with members of the media, including reporters from Variety, being escorted outside by officials around 7:30 PM.

The multi-level installation offered an immersive experience, placing attendees inside the Iceberg Lounge, a notorious criminal hangout first seen in the 2022 film “The Batman.” “The Penguin” is a spin-off from the Matt Reeves-directed blockbuster, featuring Colin Farrell reprising his role as Oswald Cobblepot.
Several actors involved in “The Penguin” activation were also evacuated by fire and police officials. At least four fire engines and San Diego Police quickly responded to the scene, ensuring the area was cleared.
HBO representatives have yet to comment on the incident. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries among the convention attendees.
The Comic-Con activation marks the most elaborate promotional effort for the DC Comics series. Production on “The Penguin” began in Spring 2023 but was paused due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Filming resumed last November, and the series is scheduled to premiere on Max this fall under the HBO brand.
In addition to Colin Farrell, “The Penguin” cast includes Cristin Milioti, Michael Zegen, Clancy Brown, Rhenzy Feliz, Michael Kelly, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Deirdre O’Connell, Carmen Ejogo, François Chau, and David H. Holmes.
