Indiana Man Sentenced to Four Years for Attempting to Poison Wife
An Indiana man, Alfred Ruf, sentenced to four years in prison for attempting to poison his wife with a spiked Coca-Cola. Wild allegations and bizarre claims emerged during the case.
Bollywood Fever: An Indiana man, Alfred Ruf, 71, has been sentenced to four years in prison after allegedly admitting to attempting to kill his wife by poisoning her Coca-Cola. Ruf pleaded guilty to aggravated battery posing a risk of death on Monday as part of a plea deal, resulting in the dismissal of a more severe charge of conspiracy to commit murder.
“Once the state changed the nature of the offense, he took responsibility for what he did wrong,” said Ruf’s defense attorney, John Lawrence Tompkins, in a statement to USA Today. “That’s the appropriate thing to do.”
Bizarre Allegations and Shocking Claims
The case, which dates back to Ruf’s 2022 arrest, has been surrounded by bizarre and wild allegations. According to the probable cause affidavit, Ruf’s wife approached the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department, expressing her belief that her husband was poisoning her. She produced a Coca-Cola can with what appeared to be “off-white residue” and a pill bottle containing a powdery substance. After testing, she reportedly tested positive for MDMA, cocaine, and Benzodiazepines, despite claiming she had never used drugs.
Ruf allegedly confessed to his wife, stating that he “felt bad” about what he had done. During an interview with deputies, Ruf claimed to be in a sexual relationship with his 31-year-old stepdaughter and one of her female friends. He alleged that the stepdaughter had provided him with the pill bottle and instructed him to put the substance in his wife’s soda to make her sleep for approximately thirteen hours. Ruf claimed this was part of a plan to eventually kill his wife.

According to the affidavit, Ruf mentioned that the daughter wanted her mother “out of the picture,” referencing an insurance policy. He also claimed that one of the women suggested they would marry him “after they took care of” his wife.
Ruf further stated that after giving the substance to his wife, the women would come over to put on a “show” for him, performing “sex acts on each other” while wearing his wife’s lingerie. However, Ruf’s attorney later said that the claims about his sexual relationship with the women were not true, and the stepdaughter denied any involvement in the poisoning scheme. No charges were brought against either woman.
Ruf allegedly told deputies that he had poisoned his wife 12 times between September and December 2021, resulting in six hospital visits for symptoms such as headaches, diarrhea, and lightheadedness.
Case Closed
Following the plea deal, the case has been closed, according to the judgment and sentencing document obtained by Law&Crime. Ruf’s sentence marks the conclusion of a case filled with disturbing allegations and convoluted claims.
