Joker: Folie à Deux Receives Harsh Criticism from Fans and Critics, Called an ‘Insult’ to the Original
Joker: Folie à Deux, the much-anticipated sequel to Joker (2019), has left fans disappointed, with many calling it an ‘insult’ to the original. The film is receiving low ratings from critics and audiences alike.
BollywoodFever: The highly anticipated Joker (2019) sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux, has finally hit cinemas, but fans and critics alike have been left disappointed by the film’s story, calling it an insult to the original Joker movie.
Eager fans, who had been waiting to see Gotham City’s infamous crime prince return to the big screen, were met with a film that has been widely panned. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has received a low score of just 33%, reflecting the overwhelmingly negative reaction from both critics and audiences.

Critics have labeled Joker: Folie à Deux as “dull” and “boring,” but it’s the fans who have taken the film’s perceived failure most seriously. Many feel the sequel fails to live up to the success of the original film, starring Joaquin Phoenix. One Rotten Tomatoes user, Nikolai B, wrote: “In a vacuum this movie cannot be any better than 5/10. But in the shadow of the first film, this ‘movie’ is an insult to the first and a stain on the genre. We as a society should take it as a warning to not force a sequel from a movie that didn’t need one.”
Another fan vented their frustration: “Hands down, worst movie I’ve ever seen. From the first one being one of my favorites to this being the worst, this series had an insane fall from grace.”
The film, directed by Todd Phillips, continues the story of Arthur Fleck (played by Phoenix), picking up where the original left off, with Fleck now facing trial after committing a series of murders, including a shocking on-air killing. However, the sequel has struggled to resonate with fans, some of whom have criticized certain scenes, like the one where Fleck tells Gaga’s character to “stop singing,” as unnecessary and awkward.
Joker: Folie à Deux received negative reviews during its premiere at the Venice Film Festival, with many critics expressing their disappointment in the film’s direction and pacing. Reports from Metro.co.uk echoed these sentiments, further fueling the backlash the film is receiving from all sides.
With a poor reception from both fans and critics, Joker: Folie à Deux has fallen far short of expectations, leaving many questioning whether a sequel was necessary in the first place.
