UNLV QB Matthew Sluka Leaves Team Amid NIL Controversy
UNLV quarterback Matthew Sluka departs the team after a reported NIL dispute. Learn more about the contract disagreement that led to his decision to redshirt this season.
BollywoodFever: In a development that underscores the complexities of college football’s NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) era, UNLV quarterback Matthew Sluka has chosen to leave the team and redshirt after just three games into the season due to an unresolved NIL dispute.
According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Sluka and a UNLV assistant coach had a verbal agreement for the former Holy Cross quarterback to receive a minimum of $100,000 if he transferred to the school. However, after enrolling, Sluka was reportedly only paid $3,000. Marcus Cromartie, Sluka’s representative from Equity Sports, confirmed that Sluka received only a $3,000 relocation stipend instead of the promised NIL payment.

“The only money Sluka has received from UNLV, per Cromartie, is a $3,000 re-location stipend for his move,” Thamel reported. Cromartie said there was never an ask for more money after UNLV’s hot start, only the initial amount he was promised up front.
However, other reports, including one from 247Sports’ Carl Reed Jr., claim that UNLV fulfilled its financial commitment and that Sluka’s camp sought more money after the team’s impressive 3-0 start, which included victories over Big 12 opponents.
“All financial commitments for UNLV QB Matthew Sluka were completely met,” Reed wrote. But after wins against KU and Houston, Sluka’s family hired an agent and they collectively feel that his market value has increased.
Fox5’s Paloma Villicana added another layer to the story, reporting that Sluka was offered more money from another program, prompting his decision to leave UNLV.
As this situation continues to unfold, one thing is clear: Sluka’s time at UNLV has come to an end, leaving the Rebels without their starting quarterback after their best start in 40 years.
