Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat disqualified from the women’s 50kg freestyle final at the Paris Olympics due to failing to make weight. Phogat was set to compete against Sarah Hildebrandt for gold.

Paris, Bollywood Fever: Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from the women’s 50kg freestyle final at the Paris Olympics on Wednesday after failing to make weight, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) announced. Phogat was scheduled to face Sarah Hildebrandt of the United States for the gold medal.

It is with regret that the Indian contingent shares news of the disqualification of Vinesh Phogat from the women’s wrestling 50kg class,” the IOA said in a statement. “Despite the best efforts by the team through the night, she weighed in a few grams over 50kg this morning.”

Phogat’s disqualification means she will not receive a medal. The international governing body of the sport, United World Wrestling, has yet to issue a statement regarding the disqualification.

The news comes as a significant disappointment for Phogat and her supporters, who had high hopes for her performance in the final.
