Mexican officials discover 19 bodies linked to a violent clash between a Guatemalan criminal gang and the Sinaloa cartel in Chiapas, highlighting the region’s escalating gang violence.
Bollywood Fever: Mexican security officials discovered the bodies of 19 men piled in the back of a truck in Chiapas state, believed to be the result of a violent clash between a Guatemalan criminal gang and Mexico’s powerful Sinaloa cartel. The grim discovery was made near the town of La Concordia, close to Mexico’s southern border with Guatemala.
According to the local prosecutor’s office, five of the men showed signs of gunshot wounds. All victims were found in dark clothing, tactical vests, and with firearm magazine clips. A security source in Chiapas informed Reuters that the victims were Guatemalan members of a criminal group attempting to gain territorial control in the area. “They are Guatemalans, they are confronting several criminal cells (in Chiapas), in this case Sinaloa,” the source stated.
Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador referred to the incident as an “unfortunate confrontation” during his morning press conference on Tuesday, confirming that both Mexicans and Guatemalans were among the victims.
Chiapas has recently seen an increase in gangland violence, attributed to criminal activities such as drug trafficking and human smuggling. The region, previously under the control of the Sinaloa cartel for drug trafficking, has seen a rise in migrant trafficking, further intensifying the criminal landscape.
“As a result of the increase in migrant trafficking in the area, the Sinaloa cartel, which previously controlled drug trafficking there, has become very strong,” the security source explained.
The incident underscores the growing violence and territorial battles between rival gangs in Chiapas, exacerbating the region’s instability and posing significant challenges for security forces.
