San Francisco 49ers’ star tackle Trent Williams is holding out for a new contract, risking fines and potentially missing the regular season as he seeks to secure his value as one of the NFL’s top offensive linemen.
Bollywood Fever: San Francisco 49ers’ star tackle Trent Williams is making headlines as his contract situation becomes increasingly tense.
Just hours after his teammate Brandon Aiyuk inked a four-year, $120 million deal, Williams’ contract status was revealed, highlighting a significant standoff between the player and the team.
Williams, like Aiyuk, is seeking a new contract that reflects his value to the team. However, the two players have taken different approaches.
While Aiyuk has been attending team practices and training camp without participating—a strategy known as holding “in”—Williams has opted to hold “out,” meaning he isn’t present at the facility at all and is incurring fines as a result.
NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport provided the latest on Williams’ contract negotiations, and the outlook isn’t promising for the 49ers. “As of right now, I do not believe they are close,” Rapoport reported on Friday morning’s Good Morning Football. He added that Williams is remaining patient, confident in his worth to the team, despite the accumulating fines. “Trent Williams is holding out, out of sight and out of mind,” Rapoport noted. “He knows what he is worth. He’s racking up fines, but he knows his value.”
Williams, an All-Pro tackle, signed a six-year, $138.06 million contract in March 2021. Even though he is under contract and set to earn $20.05 million in base salary this year, Williams feels that his current deal doesn’t fully reflect his elite status among NFL offensive linemen.
His contract, which has three years remaining, averages $23.01 million annually, ranking him as only the sixth-highest-paid offensive lineman in the league.
At 36 years old, Williams views this as potentially his last chance to secure a significant financial commitment. His holdout has lasted throughout training camp, and concerns are growing that it might extend into the regular season if an agreement isn’t reached.
Williams’ role is pivotal to the 49ers’ offensive success, directly affecting the performance of key players like Brock Purdy, Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel, and Brandon Aiyuk. His presence on the field is crucial, making this contract dispute one of the most pressing issues facing the team as the season looms.
