Abbas and Mustan Burmawalla are brothers known for directing stylish suspense, action and romantic thrillers in Bollywood with dark-lighted themes.
Their films mostly have all the characters with shades of grey.
Even the main hero or central character in their films also has grey or negative shades with selfish desire and passion to do anything to meet his/her goal and does anything to succeed their goal.
They have frequently cast Akshay Kumar, Bobby Deol, Akshaye Khanna, Bipasha Basu, Preity Zinta, Shah Rukh Khan, Ameesha Patel, Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor in their work. The duo directed landmark Bollywood films
like Khiladi, Baazigar, Soldier, Ajnabee, Baadshah, Aitraaz, Humraaz, 36 China Town, Race, Race 2 and comedian Kapil Sharma’s debut movie Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon.
They have prominently worked with the production house Venus Worldwide Entertainment and Tips Films, all of which were blockbusters.
The duo began their career with Gujarati films. In 1990, the duo made their Hindi directorial debut with the film Agneekaal, starring Raj Babbar, Jeetendra, Madhavi and Sonu Walia.
Abbas Burmawalla, Mustan Burmawalla, and their brother Hussain Burmawalla are from Surat in Gujarat state.
Abbas–Mustan wanted to do something different from their family business of furniture, which led them to seek guidance from their Hindi film editor uncle, S.D. Kura,
who advised them to undertake film editing to learn the craft and then progress to their goal of film direction. They joined Sultan Ahmed as assistant director who was directing the movie Ganga Ki Saugandh (1978).
They later joined as assistant director with Govindbhai Patel to do several films. When Patel refused an opportunity to direct Gujarati film Sajan Tara Sambharana (1985), Abbas–Mustan received their first break to direct the movie, which became a hit, thus launching their career.
