Bollywood Fever: Abbie Chatfield first gained fame with her appearance on The Bachelor, but it was her outspoken political opinions during the Covid lockdowns that truly made her a household name.
Now, the 29-year-old has revealed whether she might turn her political views into a career. “Actually, recently I was like, ‘maybe I should go into politics,’ but I’m tired. Maybe if FBoy Island, season 3, doesn’t happen,” she told Good Weekend when asked about running for office.
Chatfield’s political beliefs were shaped early in life, growing up with a single mother and no men in the house, which she says spared her from “problematic, patriarchal ideals.” Many of her friends who were raised in more “traditional” households think it’s normal for women to clean up after dinner, a notion she rejects.
“My mum’s a really intelligent, vocal, progressive woman. Growing up with her, we’d watch the news and she’d go ‘What a bloody d***head’ or ‘Isn’t it awful the way these women are being treated?’ There was constant conversation. It helped me refine my debating skills,” Chatfield shared.
She appreciates some aspects of Australian society, like Medicare and mandatory voting, which she believes makes Australian political parties more nuanced. However, she is critical of the country’s handling of issues like racism and the 2023 Australian Indigenous Voice referendum.
Chatfield sees hope in the progressive conversations happening on social media, driven by activists and educational content. “People are having progressive conversations that are really important. We’ve got a lot of work to do, but there’s optimism and hope,” she said.
Abbie Chatfield’s media career includes launching her podcast It’s A Lot, winning I’m A Celebrity … Get Me Out Of Here!, appearing on The Masked Singer, and hosting FBoy Island. Her journey from reality TV to being a prominent media personality has been marked by her candid political commentary and progressive ideals.
