“Alien: Romulus” surges to the second biggest Hollywood film of 2024 in China, earning $73.7 million in less than two weeks. The sci-fi blockbuster trails only “Godzilla v Kong.”
Bollywood Fever: “Alien: Romulus” has skyrocketed to become Hollywood’s second biggest film of the year at the mainland China box office, following a robust second weekend that solidified its success.
The sci-fi blockbuster earned RMB140 million ($19.7 million) from Friday to Sunday in China, according to data from consultancy firm Artisan Gateway.
This strong performance builds on its $26.2 million opening weekend, bringing its cumulative earnings to RMB523 million ($73.7 million) since its release on August 16.
Among Hollywood imports in 2024, “Alien: Romulus” is outpaced only by the Chinese-backed “Godzilla v Kong,” which has amassed $134 million.
In under two weeks, “Alien” has surpassed several other major Hollywood franchise titles that struggled to break the $50 million ceiling in China, including “Kung Fu Panda 4” ($52 million), “Despicable Me 4” ($56 million), “Dune 2” ($49.7 million), and “Inside Out 2” ($48 million).
Imax reported that the film earned $2.75 million on its screens over the latest weekend. After ten days, “Alien: Romulus” has garnered $11.6 million on Imax screens, accounting for approximately 16% of its total box office in China.
The Gu Changwei-directed light drama “The Hedgehog” opened in second place, earning RMB74.4 million ($105 million).
This film tells a touching story of friendship between a rebellious teenager and his mentally handicapped uncle, featuring popular stars Ge You and Karry Wang of the TFBoys boy band.
Close behind was another new Chinese release, “Untouchable,” which earned RMB73.4 million ($10.3 million). This crime drama, directed by Wang Daqing and starring Shen Teng, Zhang Yuqi, and Jack Kao, made a strong debut.
The Chinese crime action film “Go for Broke” slipped to fourth place in its second weekend, bringing in $7.1 million and accumulating $33.4 million over ten days. Meanwhile, the Japanese animation “Detective Conan: The Million Dollar Pentagram” added $4.8 million in its second weekend, with a ten-day total of $29.2 million.
Outside the top five, Thai comedy-drama “How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies” opened with an estimated $4.4 million over three days.
Artisan Gateway reports that the nationwide box office total for the weekend was $70.8 million, pushing the year-to-date total to $4.62 billion, which is more than 21% below the equivalent figure for 2023.
