McCartney Kessler rallies to defeat No. 4 seed Xinyu Wang in the second round of Tennis in the Land, marking her first victory over a top-50 opponent.
Bollywood Fever: American McCartney Kessler delivered a stunning performance in front of a supportive crowd on Wednesday, rallying to upset No. 4 seed Xinyu Wang of China in the second round of Tennis in the Land in Cleveland. Kessler overcame a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory, marking her first-ever win against a top-50 opponent.
Despite trailing 2-0 in the second set, Kessler fought back to level the match, and she finished strong by winning the final four games of the third set after Wang had tied the score at 2-2. Although Wang finished with more aces (5-4) and fewer double faults (4-3), it wasn’t enough to prevent the upset.
In other matches, the Netherlands’ Arantxa Rus knocked out seventh seed Viktoriya Tomova of Bulgaria with a 6-3, 6-3 victory.
Top seed Beatriz Haddad Maia of Brazil, No. 3 seed Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic, and Russian No. 5 seed Anastasia Potapova all managed to fend off upsets in their respective matches.
Romania’s Ana Bogdan also advanced, with two more matches scheduled for later on Wednesday.
At the Abierto GNP Seguros in Monterrey, Mexico, No. 7 seed Yue Yuan of China cruised to a 6-4, 6-1 win over Croatian Petra Martic in their second-round encounter.
While Yuan only managed one ace compared to Martic’s five, she effectively saved 4 of 6 break points and converted 5 of 6 to secure the victory.
Yuan’s match was the first of six scheduled for Wednesday.
