Apple’s Upcoming VR/AR Headset: A Bold Leap into Uncharted Territory

Apple is gearing up to reveal its most ambitious hardware product in years, and it’s venturing into an unproven arena. Speculations suggest that Apple will introduce a “mixed reality” headset at its annual developer event next week. This cutting-edge device aims to provide users with both virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) experiences, overlaying virtual images onto live video of the real world.

Apple Set to Unveil Groundbreaking VR/AR Headset with Dual Capabilities

The anticipation surrounding this AR/VR headset release is immense, as it could rival the impact of Apple’s groundbreaking Apple Watch debut in 2015. If successful, this venture has the potential to revolutionize how millions of people interact with computers and the world around them, marking a new era for the company.

However, Apple faces multiple challenges with this launch. The rumored price tag of $3,000 exceeds most of its products, testing potential buyers during a time of economic uncertainty. Additionally, other tech companies have struggled to achieve mainstream traction for their headsets. Moreover, while Apple has been developing this product, the tech community has shifted its focus to artificial intelligence, leaving some questioning the demand for VR and AR.

Nonetheless, Apple’s track record and massive customer base make it well-positioned to overcome skepticism. The company’s entry into the market could breathe new life into the headset industry.

“This represents a new way to interact digitally with others and with applications, similar to its other devices like Macs, iPads, iPhones, and Watches,” says Ramon Llamas, a director at market research firm IDC. “Being in the initial stages, Apple can shape the narrative of what AR/VR can be like and profit from it through devices and services.”

Apple’s Augmented Reality Vision

Apple CEO Tim Cook has long expressed interest in augmented reality, considering it a core technology with significant potential. In recent interviews, Cook highlighted how AR could enhance communication, collaboration, and creativity among people.

The early potential of AR is already visible in some iPhone apps, such as Ikea Place and Measure, as well as various Apple Watch apps. These apps allow users to overlay virtual objects or use virtual tools to interact with their surroundings.

On Monday, Apple may showcase its plans to take AR to the next level. Reports suggest that Apple’s headset will offer both a virtual reality mode and a mixed-reality component, enabling users to see augmented reality objects projected onto the real world. The device, possibly named Reality One or Reality Pro, is expected to feature an intuitive iOS-like interface, immersive video display, cameras, sensors for gesture control, eye-tracking, and integration with Siri.

The rumored headset is also said to include a range of applications for gaming, fitness, meditation, and seamless access to popular iOS apps like Messages, FaceTime, and Safari. With FaceTime, for example, the headset may render the user’s face and full body in virtual reality, creating an illusion of being in the same room as the person on the other end of the call.

While the initial price and limited audience may be obstacles, experts believe Apple’s headset could find success in the enterprise market, particularly for applications like training, education, and immersive video conferencing. Apple’s reputation, coupled with strong developer and content support, could make it an attractive option for businesses.

Navigating an Uncertain Market

Currently, the headset market remains relatively small, with 8.8 million AR/VR headsets shipped globally in 2022—a 21% decline compared to the previous year. In contrast, Apple sells hundreds of millions of iPhones annually.

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and a dominant force in the emerging VR market, faces its own challenges. It has faced criticism from investors due to significant losses incurred from its VR product development and the metaverse concept. Additionally, Meta’s socializing app for VR, Horizon Worlds, reportedly had only 200,000 active users.

In an attempt to overshadow Apple’s announcement, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently teased the Meta Quest 3 headset, which promises improved performance, mixed-reality features, and an enhanced design at a more affordable price of $499.

Over the years, other headsets and smart glasses products, such as Google Glass and Snapchat’s smart sunglasses, have struggled to gain widespread popularity.

According to Eric Abbruzzese, a researcher at market research firm ABI Research specializing in AR and VR, the initial demand for Apple’s headset might come from devoted Apple fans already immersed in the company’s ecosystem. These early adopters understand the value of integrating Apple services with the new headset. Subsequently, Apple could target the mass market with a more consumer-friendly headset by 2024 or 2025, following the typical trajectory of their product launches.

Apple’s Advantage: Creating Demand

Apple has a unique ability to generate demand for experimental products or create new categories. Another advantage Apple possesses over its peers is its extensive retail presence. Consumers can visit Apple stores to try out the headset, which can significantly impact customer adoption.

“Apple does not need to do much other than be Apple,” says Abbruzzese. “There will be interest.”

While initial market reactions and consumer adoption might not match Apple’s previous successes, Apple’s brand strength, ecosystem integration, and retail advantage could pave the way for a successful foray into the VR/AR headset market.
