Argentina Triples Lithium Production Capacity in Two Years

Argentina’s lithium production capacity has surged to 136,500 tons of lithium carbonate equivalent, driven by new projects and expansions, as reported by CAEM.

Bollywood Fever: Argentina has significantly increased its lithium carbonate equivalent (LCE) production capacity over the past two years, reaching an installed capacity of 136,500 tons nationwide. This notable growth, reported by the country’s Chamber of Mining Entrepreneurs (CAEM) on Tuesday, has been fueled by the inauguration of new projects and the expansion of existing ones.

Currently ranked as the world’s fourth-largest lithium producer, Argentina now hosts four operational lithium production projects. Among these is the newly inaugurated Centenario Ratones plant, located in the northern province of Salta. This plant is a joint venture between France’s Eramet and Chinese steelmaker Tsingshan. The facility, which began operations earlier this month, is projected to produce 24,000 tons of LCE annually by 2025. This development aims to help Argentina close the production gap with Chile, Latin America’s leading producer of lithium.

“The recent inauguration of Centenario Ratones, the fourth lithium production plant in our country and the first in Salta, adds to a series of new projects and expansions that tripled installed capacity in just two years,” CAEM stated.

The CAEM report highlighted the impressive increase in Argentina’s production potential, which soared from 37,500 tons of LCE in 2022 to the current 136,500 tons. This growth positions Argentina as a significant player within South America’s “lithium triangle,” which also includes Chile and Bolivia. The region is known for its vast lithium reserves, essential for the production of electric vehicle batteries.

With several new projects slated to come online later this year, Argentina is poised to further boost its lithium output. These developments underscore the country’s strategic efforts to capitalize on the rising global demand for lithium, driven by the accelerating transition to electric vehicles and renewable energy technologies.
