Baker Mayfield throws four touchdowns as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeat the Washington Commanders 37-20 in a dominant season opener. Mike Evans and Chris Godwin shine.
Bollywood Fever: The highly anticipated debut of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ offense under coordinator Liam Coen did not disappoint, as the Bucs cruised to a 37-20 victory over the Washington Commanders on Sunday afternoon.Â
The Buccaneers showcased a strong passing game, led by quarterback Baker Mayfield, while the defense held rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels and the Commanders in check.
Mayfield completed 24 of 30 passes for 289 yards and four touchdowns, shaking off some early rust.
After three first-half drives ended in field goals, Mayfield connected with Mike Evans for a touchdown in the second quarter, helping the Bucs take control of the game.
The Commanders struggled offensively, with Jayden Daniels mostly relying on his legs. He finished with 88 rushing yards and two touchdowns but could not find a rhythm through the air.
Washington’s only significant highlight in the first half came from a Brian Robinson touchdown run before halftime, cutting the Bucs’ lead to 16-7.
Tampa Bay’s defense, dealing with several injuries, including the absence of Logan Hall and Calijah Kancey, also lost Bryce Hall to a right leg injury during the game.Â
Despite these setbacks, the defense held strong, allowing the offense to dominate the game.
Mike Evans caught two touchdowns, while Chris Godwin and rookie Jalen McMillan each added scores in the second half, putting the game out of reach for Washington.
Rachaad White and Bucky Irving provided solid contributions in the running game, with Irving rushing for 62 yards on nine carries and adding 14 yards through the air.
The Buccaneers demonstrated their offensive potential while also raising some concerns about defensive depth due to injuries.
However, their dominant performance in the season opener bodes well for the year ahead
