The Los Angeles Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks were about to start their regular season game when a swarm of bees descended on the netting behind home plate at Chase Field in Phoenix, causing a delay. Mike Rock, the Diamondbacks’ VP of Ballpark Operations, quickly contacted beekeeper Matt Hilton from Blue Sky Pest Control for help.
Hilton arrived to applause and removed the bees, then amusingly took off his bee suit hood, prompting cheers from the 28,667 attendees. He even threw the ceremonial first pitch, a significant honor in baseball, which delighted MLB fans and went viral online.
Afterward, Hilton reflected on leaving his son’s tee-ball game to help, calling the experience “pretty awesome” and appreciating the fans’ response. “I thought I was here to just take care of a bee problem,” he said. “People were pretty hyped up. It was pretty cool.”
The Diamondbacks went on to beat the Dodgers 4-3, tying their three-game series at one win each, giving fans even more reason to cheer.
