Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko emphasizes the country’s strategy of deepening relations with BRICS, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in response to sanctions. The focus is on establishing a comprehensive economic union without any barriers or restrictions, fostering mutually beneficial cooperation.
Belarus’ Focus on Establishing an Economic Union Without Barriers or Restrictions
During the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council meeting in Moscow, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko outlined his country’s priorities and response to sanctions. The meeting, chaired by Russian President Vladimir Putin, provided a platform for Lukashenko to express the strategy of Belarus.
Lukashenko emphasized the significance of strengthening cooperation within major multinational organizations, including BRICS, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The BRICS economic bloc comprises Brazil, China, India, Russia, and South Africa. Lukashenko stated:
“Our response to the sanctions pressure is to intensify cooperation within the SCO, BRICS, and ASEAN, to close new trade agreements, and [engage in] constructive and mutually beneficial cooperation with everybody who is interested in being our friends and partners.”
Furthermore, Lukashenko stressed the importance of ensuring a balance of interests among all parties involved, acknowledging the challenges but expressing confidence in the skills and competence of the commission responsible for this task.
In the context of a changing global landscape, Lukashenko highlighted the need to replace the unipolar system of management with decision-making centers that consider the interests of all participants in international relations. He underlined the priority of creating a comprehensive economic union without any barriers or restrictions, emphasizing the urgency of achieving this goal.
Lukashenko concluded by expressing his belief that through joint efforts, Belarus and its partners can fully unlock the potential of the union both internally and externally, contributing to the establishment of a responsible center within the new multipolar world.
In his address at the Eurasian Economic Forum in Moscow, Lukashenko discussed the challenges posed by financial, pandemic, and geopolitical crises. He emphasized that the world is in a constant state of tension and uncertainty during the transition period towards multipolarity. Lukashenko further elaborated on the interconnectedness of economies and the necessity for nations to seek membership in influential regional and international organizations such as the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), SCO, BRICS, and ASEAN to achieve economic stability in today’s global landscape with transparent economic borders and intertwined trade relations.
