Chelsea’s Ben Chilwell may need to leave for more playing time, suggests head coach Enzo Maresca ahead of Premier League opener.
Bollywood Fever: Ben Chilwell may need to consider leaving Chelsea to secure more playing time, according to the club’s new head coach, Enzo Maresca.
As the team prepares for their Premier League opener against Manchester City on Sunday, Maresca hinted that the 27-year-old defender’s future might be best served elsewhere, given the competition for spots in Chelsea’s crowded squad.
Chilwell, whose contract with Chelsea runs until 2027, has made 106 appearances since joining the club from Leicester City in 2020.
He played a crucial role in helping Chelsea win the Champions League in 2021.
However, the England international has struggled to maintain a regular spot in the lineup, especially after the arrival of Spaniard Marc Cucurella in 2022.
An injury last season further limited Chilwell’s appearances, restricting him to just 21 games across all competitions.
“Chilly (Chilwell) has not been training for the last few days because he has been ill,” Maresca explained to reporters. “It’s quite clear, I love the way he is, but the problem is that he struggles with us a little bit to find his best position.”
Maresca also acknowledged the challenge of managing a large squad, noting, “This morning we had 22 players training, and if you ask all of them, they will say they want to play against City on Sunday, but that is impossible.
When they train every day and do not get any minutes, it is not good for them or for me, as I need to make a decision. It is probably better to leave and get minutes elsewhere. The transfer window is open, so we’ll see what happens.”
With the transfer window still open, Chilwell’s situation at Chelsea remains uncertain, and a move could provide the playing time he needs to reignite his career.
