“One Tree Hill” alum Bethany Joy Lenz shares her story of living in a cult for a decade in her upcoming memoir, Dinner for Vampires. Learn more about her journey to recovery.
Bollywood Fever: Bethany Joy Lenz, best known for her role on One Tree Hill, is taking a monumental step in sharing the details of her decade-long experience living in a cult.
Her memoir, Dinner for Vampires, which releases on October 22nd, dives deep into the traumatic chapter of her life and the recovery that followed.
Lenz, who first revealed her involvement in the cult during a candid conversation with her One Tree Hill co-stars Sophia Bush and Hilarie Burton-Morgan on their podcast “Drama Queens”, is now ready to share more.
On the podcast, she disclosed that she had been part of a cult for ten years but did not reveal the name. Since that admission, Lenz has described the long road to healing, which has taken just as long as her time in the group.
Lenz began writing about her experiences privately as a form of therapy, which eventually led her to the realization that her story could help others. “Writing about it was a way for me to process everything,” Lenz explained. “It was incredibly important for me to get it right and to ensure everything was accurately portrayed.” She added that the pressure of telling her story was daunting, especially considering the legal complexities still tied to her involvement.
Opening up to People ahead of her memoir’s release, Lenz discussed how she initially found a sense of community and belonging in a Bible study group. The environment, which started out feeling normal, gradually shifted into something much more controlling, as she described: “It still looked normal, but by the time it started morphing, I was too far into the relationships to notice.”
While recounting her journey, Lenz reflected on how she has processed her emotions over the years. “I’ve had a lot of angry, questioning moments with God,” she shared. “But as time passes, I start to see the blessings in what I went through. Walking through that pain has brought good things into my life, even though I’ve wished many times that it hadn’t happened.”
In her memoir, Lenz gives a raw account of her emotional and spiritual journey, from the allure of belonging to a group to the difficult recovery process that followed her departure from the cult. The writing process was not just therapeutic but also a way for her to regain control of her narrative.
Dinner for Vampires is the culmination of years of reflection, healing, and the courage to tell a deeply personal story. As she steps forward, Lenz hopes her story will resonate with others who have faced similar struggles and will inspire them to reclaim their power, just as she has.
