Bill Maher discusses Taylor Swift’s influence on voter registration and her recent endorsement of Kamala Harris on HBO’s Real Time. Swift’s support reportedly inspired over 400,000 new voter registrations.
BollywoodFever: On the latest episode of HBO’s Real Time, Bill Maher dove into a major topic this week: Taylor Swift’s endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris.
The pop star’s endorsement of Harris reportedly led to over 400,000 people visiting Vote.gov, a website that directs individuals to voter registration resources.
Maher expressed astonishment at Swift’s influence on the 2024 presidential election.
“Taylor Swift finally told people who to vote for,” Maher said, adding that the usual dismissal of celebrity endorsements didn’t apply in this case. “Just the number of people who were immediately registered from that tweet — it’s astounding.”
The comedian pointed out how influential celebrities can be in shaping political decisions, referencing George Clooney’s role in urging President Biden to step down.
“I wrote the exact same editorial,” Maher joked, “but as soon as George Clooney said it, everyone listened.”
Maher also found it surprising that Swift’s influence seems to resonate more with men than women.
A May poll by Redfield & Wilton Strategies, conducted for Newsweek, found that 27% of male voters were more likely to support a candidate endorsed by Swift. “I must have gauged this phenomenon all wrong,” Maher said. “I thought it would be women.”
Following this week’s presidential debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris, Swift endorsed Harris via social media. In her post, she praised the vice president as a “steady-handed, gifted leader” who fights for LGBTQ+ rights, IVF, and women’s rights.
Swift said she believed Harris could lead the country “by calm and not chaos,” while also expressing admiration for Harris’ running mate, Tim Walz.
