Denver Broncos prepare for Tampa Bay Buccaneers and in-form QB Baker Mayfield. Vance Joseph recalls his experience with Mayfield and discusses Denver’s game plan adjustments.

BollywoodFever: Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph has a long history with Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield, dating back to their time at the 2018 Senior Bowl when Joseph was head coach.

Mayfield, who went No. 1 overall in that year’s NFL draft, has had a rollercoaster career but is now thriving with the Buccaneers, leading them to a 2-0 start in 2023.

“Baker is a great story,” Joseph remarked, praising Mayfield’s resilience and determination to overcome early-career setbacks. “He’s back.

It speaks to his character, the coaching, and his will to keep improving.” Mayfield’s journey mirrors that of other quarterbacks like Seattle’s Geno Smith, who also found success after a rough start.

Mayfield has posted impressive stats this season, throwing for 474 yards with a 74.5% completion rate, five touchdowns, and just one interception.

“He’s playing the best I’ve ever seen him play,” Joseph said, noting Mayfield’s ability to make every throw and extend plays outside the pocket.

Meanwhile, the Broncos’ coaching staff is reevaluating their offensive strategy.

Head coach Sean Payton mentioned after Week 2 that streamlining the offense might help Denver perform better against Tampa Bay and in the coming weeks.

Offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi echoed the sentiment, explaining the focus is on reducing the number of plays to avoid overwhelming players.

On the defensive front, Broncos lineman John Franklin-Myers is progressing through concussion protocol and returned to practice in a limited capacity.

His status will be updated closer to game day.

Other injury updates include OLB Baron Browning and JL Skinner, who did not participate in Thursday’s practice, while S Brandon Jones saw limited action.

As Denver prepares to face a red-hot Baker Mayfield and the Buccaneers, simplifying their offensive scheme and getting key players healthy will be critical for their chances in this upcoming matchup.
