As James Harden adjusts to his new role with the Clippers, he faces questions about his fitness and performance. Can he make a return to the NBA All-Star team in 2025?
BollywoodFever: James Harden‘s reputation as one of the finest scorers in NBA history speaks for itself. The Clippers guard has earned nearly every individual accolade the league has to offer, except for an elusive championship ring. However, recent years have been challenging for the 35-year-old veteran.
Harden’s identity as a high-volume scorer has been fading, particularly since his departure from the Houston Rockets. Plagued by injuries and trade requests, he struggled to find stability with both the Brooklyn Nets and the Philadelphia 76ers. Despite these obstacles, Harden now seems more content with the Clippers.
Concerns over his fitness and occasionally sluggish performances have led many to question his longevity. However, Harden has successfully adapted his game, transitioning into more of a facilitator. Still, his ten-year All-Star streak ended in 2022, raising the question: is a return to the All-Star stage on the horizon for Harden?
Is an All-Star Comeback Possible for Harden?
In his first season with the Clippers, Harden posted solid stats: 16.6 points per game (PPG), 8.5 assists per game (APG), 5.1 rebounds per game (RPG), and 1.1 steals per game (SPG). These are impressive numbers, but surprising for a player with 318 games where he scored 30 or more points.
The Clippers recently took a significant hit with Paul George’s departure, leaving Harden with a larger role. This could be a hidden opportunity for him, giving him more chances to control the ball and play his natural game. Since leaving Houston, Harden has had to share the ball more, limiting his scoring opportunities.
Clippers coach Tyronn Lue might offer Harden more freedom on the court, allowing him to revert to a more aggressive offensive role. However, the big question is: can Harden rediscover some of his Rockets-era form, even at a slightly lower level? Unlike his time in Houston, Harden now shares the court with two-time Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard, easing the offensive burden.
Harden’s Path to the 2025 All-Star Game
To make a serious run for the 2025 All-Star Game, Harden will likely need to average 25 PPG while maintaining strong assists and rebounds numbers similar to last season. Shooting at least 40% from beyond the arc will be crucial, as will the Clippers’ overall performance heading into February.
A mere +500 record won’t suffice. The Clippers must be among the top six teams in the Western Conference if Harden hopes to reclaim his All-Star status. If Harden hits these benchmarks, he could very well secure a reserve spot on the 2025 All-Star team.
