Canada Soccer addresses racist abuse directed at a player following their Copa America loss to Argentina. The governing bodies are in touch to address the incident.
Atlanta, Bollywood Fever: Canada Soccer announced they are in contact with soccer’s governing bodies after one of their players faced racist abuse online following their 2-0 defeat to Argentina in the Copa America opener on Thursday.
Although Canada Soccer did not disclose the player’s name, center back Moise Bombito, who is Black, received the abuse following a hard tackle on Argentina’s Lionel Messi, where he caught the Argentina captain on the ankle.
“Canada Soccer is aware of and deeply disturbed by racist comments made online and directed at one of our men’s national team players following tonight’s match,” the organization said in a statement. “We are in communication with CONCACAF and CONMEBOL about this matter,” it added, referring to the soccer governing bodies for the Americas.
Bombito responded on social media post-match, writing: “My beautiful Canada,” with a heart emoji and adding, “No room for that bs.”
Earlier this week, FIFA announced that its social media tools designed to protect players from online abuse would be made available to all 211 member associations and their teams.
In the match, Argentina secured victory with goals from Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez, earning three points and placing Canada at the bottom of Group A.
