French tennis star Caroline Garcia will not play for the rest of the season as she battles anxiety and physical injuries, aiming to reset for a 2025 comeback.
BollywoodFever: Former world number four, Caroline Garcia, has announced she will not play for the remainder of the 2024 tennis season as she deals with anxiety, panic attacks, and physical injury.
The 30-year-old French tennis star, who won the WTA Finals in 2022 and reached the U.S. Open semi-finals the same year, revealed that she needs time to mentally and physically reset ahead of a potential return in 2025.
Garcia, currently ranked 36th in the world, has struggled this season, failing to advance beyond the second round of any Grand Slam.
She has been battling a persistent shoulder injury, which has impacted her ability to compete at her best. “Physically, I’ve been pushing my shoulder to its limit… I need more time off to heal properly,” Garcia wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
Beyond the physical toll, Garcia opened up about her mental health struggles, citing anxiety and panic attacks that have affected her performance. I’m exhausted from the anxiety, the panic attacks, the tears before matches,” she explained, adding that the relentless nature of tennis has taken a toll on her personal life.
While Garcia’s career highlights include two Grand Slam doubles titles and 11 WTA singles titles, including the Cincinnati Masters, she admitted she has been fixated on her perceived shortcomings. In my mind, I’ve been stuck on what I haven’t achieved,” she wrote, reflecting on her disappointment at not reaching world number one or winning a singles Grand Slam.
Despite her current struggles, Garcia remains determined to return stronger in 2025. I’m choosing to step away for now… I’ll start preparing for 2025 early—getting ready physically, mentally, and tactically,” she concluded.
Garcia’s candidness about her mental health echoes a growing conversation in tennis, following the lead of stars like Naomi Osaka, who withdrew from the 2021 French Open citing depression.
