CBS News moderators will not fact-check Ohio Senator JD Vance and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz during the vice presidential debate, instead allowing the candidates to challenge each other.

BollywoodFever: CBS News has confirmed that moderators Margaret Brennan and Norah O’Donnell will not fact-check Ohio Senator JD Vance and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz during the upcoming vice presidential debate, leaving the two candidates to challenge each other’s claims. The decision marks a break from recent debates where moderators intervened to correct false statements, such as ABC’s handling of former President Donald Trump during a presidential debate earlier this month.

While ABC moderators Linsey Davis and David Muir were praised for fact-checking Trump, CBS has opted to let Vance and Walz manage rebuttals themselves. CBS will instead offer real-time fact-checking on its website, social media platforms, and during analysis segments post-debate.

Concerns for Tim Walz

The decision could present challenges for Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Walz, as his opponent, JD Vance, has been known to make exaggerated or false claims, including a recent falsehood about Haitian migrants in Ohio. Walz is reportedly anxious about the debate, knowing he may have to directly confront Vance’s statements without moderator intervention.

CBS’s Approach and Stakes

CBS’s decision to abstain from fact-checking live could have broader implications, both for the network and the candidates. O’Donnell, the current anchor of CBS Evening News, is expected to step down after the presidential election, with Brennan a possible replacement. CBS’s approach to the debate may impact the network’s credibility as it negotiates high-stakes interviews with figures like Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris.
