Bollywood Fever: Spaniard Cesc Fabregas has been appointed as the head coach of Como, where he is also a minority shareholder, after successfully leading the team to promotion to Serie A as an assistant and interim coach last season, the club announced on Friday.
The former Arsenal, Barcelona, and Chelsea midfielder ended his playing career at Como in 2023 and subsequently took on the role of assistant coach. The 37-year-old took over as interim coach in November following the dismissal of head coach Moreno Longo. Under Fabregas’s leadership, Como climbed from seventh to third in Serie B before Osian Roberts was appointed as interim coach in December, with Fabregas continuing as his assistant. The team secured automatic promotion after finishing second in the league.
Roberts will now serve as Como’s head of development, the club stated in a press release.
“I am so happy to be starting this season as head coach and I thank the ownership group for trusting me with this position,” Fabregas said. “It’s going to be a tough and important season, but myself and the rest of the coaching staff are ready and we all believe.”
In his new role, Fabregas has already made a significant move by signing former Liverpool, Sevilla, and Villarreal defender Alberto Moreno on a one-year contract, with an option for an automatic extension for another season.
“Alberto is a fast, agile, and technically gifted defender with great international experience, having played in top European competitions,” Fabregas said. “His characteristics will certainly be useful to face a new and difficult championship.”
Fabregas’s appointment and the addition of Moreno mark the beginning of what promises to be an exciting season for Como as they prepare to compete in Serie A.
