Charli XCX addresses and condemns the controversial chant “Taylor Swift is dead” at her concerts, calling for fans to stop the demeaning behavior. Read more about her stance and the recent tensions in the music industry.
Bollywood Fever: Charli XCX has taken a strong stance against a controversial chant at her concerts. The singer and songwriter recently took to social media to express her disapproval of fans chanting, “Taylor Swift is dead,” during her shows.
The issue arose as Taylor Swift faced criticism from some fans for allegedly blocking other albums from reaching the number one spot on top music charts by releasing new versions of her “The Tortured Poets Department” album. Since the release of her eleventh studio album, Swift has maintained the number-one spot on the Billboard 200 album chart.
Charli XCX, known for her hits and unique style, firmly rebuked the demeaning remark some fans chant at her shows. She took to her Instagram story on Monday to address the issue, writing, “Can the people who do this please stop[?] Online or at my shows. It is the opposite of what I want and it disturbs me that anyone would think there is room for this in this community. I will not tolerate it.”
In recent weeks, people have accused Swift of blocking other albums, like Charli’s “Brat” or Billie Eilish‘s “Hit Me Hard and Soft,” from hitting the number one spot on the top musical charts by releasing new versions of her “The Tortured Poets Department” album. This has led to criticism of Swift, with some claiming that her actions are intentional.
Despite these tensions, Charli’s relationship with Swift has been cordial, with no public disputes or fallouts. However, fans have speculated that Charli’s song “Sympathy Is a Knife” may reference the “Bad Blood” singer. The 31-year-old singer, engaged to The 1975 drummer George Daniel, has lyrics in the song that describe a woman who “taps into [her] insecurities.”
“Don’t know if it’s real or if I’m spiraling… One voice tells me that they laugh. George says I’m just paranoid… Don’t wanna see her backstage at my boyfriend’s show. Fingers crossed behind my back. I hope they break up quick,” Charli sings.
Charli XCX was a supporting act for Swift’s 2018 Reputation Tour alongside Camila Cabello. Despite expressing gratitude for the opportunity, she later told Pitchfork that as an artist, it felt like she was performing for a much younger audience, saying, “I was really grateful that [Taylor] asked me on that tour. But as an artist, it kind of felt like I was getting up on stage and waving to five-year-olds.”
As tensions in the music industry continue to evolve, Charli XCX’s call for respect and positive behavior at her concerts stands as a reminder of the importance of maintaining a supportive and inclusive community.
