China criticizes U.S. sanctions on its entities over the Ukraine war as “illegal and unilateral” ahead of high-level talks in Beijing with White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan.

Bollywood Fever: China has strongly condemned the latest round of U.S. sanctions on its entities related to the Ukraine war, calling them “illegal and unilateral” and “not based on facts.”

The criticism comes just before White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan’s scheduled arrival in Beijing for a series of high-level talks aimed at addressing ongoing tensions between the two superpowers.

Last week, the United States imposed sanctions on over 400 entities and individuals accused of supporting Russia’s war effort in Ukraine.

Among those targeted were several Chinese companies that U.S. officials claim are helping Moscow evade Western sanctions and strengthen its military capabilities.

Washington has repeatedly warned Beijing about its support for Russia’s defense industrial base and has issued numerous sanctions to limit Moscow’s access to critical technologies.

Chinese officials have warned the US

China’s special envoy for Eurasian affairs, Li Hui, voiced strong opposition to the sanctions during a briefing for diplomats in Beijing.

The briefing followed Li’s recent round of shuttle diplomacy, which included meetings with officials from Brazil, Indonesia, and South Africa.

“A particular country uses the crisis … to shift blame in an attempt to fabricate the so-called China responsibility theory and threatens countries that have normal economic and trade ties with Russia with illegal and unilateral sanctions,” said Li, without directly naming the United States.

China’s commerce ministry and foreign ministry have also expressed strong opposition to the sanctions, with the commerce ministry condemning the measures on Sunday.

The U.S. sanctions specifically target companies in China involved in shipping machine tools and microelectronics to Russia.

“These words and deeds are totally for their selfish interests and are not based on facts, the international community will never accept them,” Li added, emphasizing China’s disapproval of the U.S. actions.

China has been positioning itself as a mediator in the Ukraine conflict, despite criticism from Western nations.

Beijing has previously put forward proposals to support the exchange of prisoners of war, oppose the use of nuclear and biological weapons, and condemn attacks on civilian nuclear facilities.

In a 12-point paper released over a year ago, China outlined general principles for ending the war but did not delve into specific solutions.

China and Brazil have jointly called for peace talks between Russia and Ukraine this year, with China hoping to gain broader international support for its peace efforts.

During his briefing, Li expressed the desire for more countries to endorse China’s approach to resolving the conflict.

As Sullivan arrives in Beijing, these discussions will likely play a crucial role in shaping the future of U.S.-China relations, particularly in the context of their differing stances on the Ukraine war.

The outcome of these talks could significantly influence the global response to the ongoing conflict and the broader geopolitical landscape.
