China, Tanzania, and Zambia sign a deal to rehabilitate the TAZARA railway, enhancing rail-sea transport in East Africa as part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative.
Bollywood Fever: China, Tanzania, and Zambia have taken a significant step toward improving East Africa’s transportation infrastructure by signing an initial agreement to rehabilitate the Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) line.Â
The deal, witnessed by Chinese President Xi Jinping and the Tanzanian and Zambian presidents, aims to enhance rail-sea intermodal transport in the resource-rich region.
Built between 1970 and 1975 with an interest-free loan from China, the 1,860-kilometer TAZARA railway has long been a crucial route for transporting copper and cobalt from Zambia’s mines to the Tanzanian coast.
The railway’s refurbishment, announced during the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation in Beijing, seeks to modernize this vital line as part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative.
President Xi emphasized China’s commitment to deepening cooperation with Africa, stating, “China is willing to make new progress in the revitalization of the Tanzania-Zambia railway and strengthen the rail-sea transport network in East Africa.”
The rehabilitation is set to receive financial backing from the World Bank, which approved $270 million earlier this year to boost regional trade between Tanzania and Zambia.
Additionally, China proposed a $1 billion public-private partnership investment in February to support the railway’s modernization, which could enhance connectivity across East Africa for years to come.
