Chinese President Xi Jinping meets Vietnam’s new leader To Lam in Beijing to reinforce economic and trade relations, focusing on infrastructure projects and regional cooperation.
Beijing, Bollywood Fever: China‘s President Xi Jinping held talks on Monday with Vietnam‘s new leader, To Lam, marking his first state visit since taking office, as reported by Chinese state media Xinhua.Â
The meeting highlights the strong ties between the two communist-led neighbors, who share a history of well-developed economic and trade relations, despite occasional tensions in the South China Sea.
Lam’s decision to make China his first official destination underscores the significance of the relationship between the two nations.
Last week, China expressed its enthusiasm over Lam’s visit, stating that it “fully reflects the great importance he attaches to the development of ties between both parties and countries.”
Lam began his three-day visit on Sunday in China’s southern province of Guangzhou, where he engaged in meetings with Chinese Premier Li Qiang and other top officials.
During his time in Guangzhou, Lam also visited locations where Vietnam’s former President Ho Chi Minh conducted revolutionary activities.
This visit follows a December meeting between China and Vietnam, during which President Xi visited Vietnam and the two countries signed over a dozen agreements aimed at strengthening cooperation.
These agreements, although not fully detailed, covered areas such as railway development, investment in various sectors, and establishing communication channels to manage unexpected incidents in the South China Sea.
A key focus of the discussions has been improving cross-border railway connectivity. Three major rail projects were highlighted, including one connecting mountainous Lao Cai in Vietnam’s northwest to the port city of Haiphong, and a potential link between two coastal cities to Haiphong.
Both nations have pledged continued support for their railway companies to enhance the efficiency of Vietnamese goods transiting through China.
The talks also emphasized cooperation on other projects under China’s Belt and Road Initiative, with investment plans spanning agriculture, infrastructure, energy, digital economy, and green development.
China and Vietnam, who established diplomatic relations in 1950, have built a comprehensive strategic partnership since 2008. This partnership was further solidified five years later, extending their cooperation to address shared international and regional concerns.
