After a down year in 2023, Chris Godwin is shining as Baker Mayfield’s top target, leading the Buccaneers in receptions and yards through three games.
BollywoodFever: After a somewhat underwhelming 2023 season, Tampa Bay Buccaneers star wide receiver Chris Godwin is off to a strong start in 2024.
Despite finishing last year with just over 1,000 yards, it wasn’t the performance many had come to expect from the reliable playmaker.
However, through the first three games this season, Godwin is proving to be Baker Mayfield‘s favorite target, leading the team in receptions and receiving yards.
In the Week 3 matchup against the Denver Broncos, Godwin was once again the Bucs’ top receiver, hauling in six receptions for 53 yards and a touchdown.Â
That score marked his second trip to the end zone this season, already matching his touchdown total from all of 2023.
While Mike Evans had a standout season last year, Godwin is currently leading the receiving corps in targets and receptions, with 11 more catches and 10 more targets than Evans.Â
Despite Evans taking a backseat thus far, it’s expected that he will see increased involvement as the season progresses.
Godwin’s Success in the Slot
A key storyline heading into the season was Godwin’s return to the slot, where he has historically found great success.
This shift in positioning appears to be paying off, as Godwin has 21 receptions with zero drops through three games, demonstrating his reliability and precision.
As the Buccaneers prepare to face the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 4, Godwin will look to continue building on his strong start to the season, cementing his role as the focal point of the team’s passing attack.
