BollywoodFever: A woman has recounted the terrifying moment her childhood friend, Cindy Waldron, was dragged to her death by a crocodile during a late-night swim in Queensland, Australia. Cindy, 46, had traveled from New South Wales to celebrate her friend Leeann Mitchell’s recovery from breast cancer when the horrific event unfolded.
The lifelong friends had waded into waist-deep water at Thornton Beach, an area known for its high crocodile population, when Cindy uttered her last words: “It’s got me.”
The Night of the Tragedy
Speaking publicly for the first time, Leeann shared her account of the tragedy with 7 News Spotlight. She described how the pair were enjoying a carefree moment at the water’s edge, unaware of the lurking danger. “It was really dark. Cindy’s back was to the water, and mine was to the beach, and we were laughing,” Leeann recalled. Then came Cindy’s haunting words: “It’s got me.”
At first, Leeann thought her friend was reacting to something harmless like seaweed, but soon realized the horrifying reality. The crocodile’s force was immense, pulling Cindy from her grasp as Leeann fought desperately to hold on. “I was clawing onto her arm… and then, she was gone.”
Despite her best efforts to rescue Cindy, Leeann was forced to swim back to shore in pitch darkness to get help. She sustained puncture wounds to her arm and was treated for shock at the hospital.
Crocodile Found and Killed Days Later
Days after the incident, a 4-meter crocodile was located and killed, with Cindy’s remains discovered inside.
Leeann described Cindy as her “chosen sister,” reflecting on their deep bond. The pair had been celebrating the end of Leeann’s cancer treatment and were full of joy on what would tragically be their last night together.
Public Reaction
The story resurfaced on social media, prompting a wave of emotional responses. While some commenters expressed sorrow for the friends, others pointed out the dangers of swimming in crocodile territory. One person wrote: “So sad, but simple precautions would have avoided this.” Another added, “What an awesome set of bffs. My heart breaks for them.”
Despite the heartbreaking outcome, Leeann shared a final memory of their friendship, showing a blurry photo taken just moments before the tragedy, filled with smiles and joy.
