Despite Deshaun Watson’s slow start, the Cleveland Browns are unlikely to bench him due to his massive contract and financial commitments. The Browns hope for a turnaround against the Raiders.
BollywoodFever: The Cleveland Browns are off to a disappointing 1-2 start after making the playoffs with an 11-6 record last season. The early struggles have led to questions about quarterback Deshaun Watson’s performance. Watson, acquired in a blockbuster trade from the Houston Texans, has yet to meet expectations, sparking some speculation about his future as the Browns’ starter.
The Contract Factor
One of the biggest reasons Watson is unlikely to be benched is his massive five-year, fully guaranteed $230 million contract. After a recent restructuring, Cleveland’s financial burden has increased, making it almost impossible to move on from Watson without incurring a substantial dead cap hit. The earliest the Browns could move on from Watson without a huge financial penalty would be 2027, and even then, he would still count $26.9 million against the cap.
With only 551 passing yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions through the first three games, Watson’s performance is not living up to the expectations that come with his contract. However, the Browns are financially committed to giving him every opportunity to turn things around.
Looking Ahead to the Raiders
The Browns will hope Watson can find his rhythm when they face the Las Vegas Raiders (1-2) at Allegiant Stadium on Sunday. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:25 p.m. EST.
