Two women’s college soccer players from Rutgers and UMass were banned for two games following a physical altercation during their match on Sunday. The heated game ended with a 1-0 victory for UMass.
Bollywood Fever: A heated women’s college soccer match between Rutgers and the University of Massachusetts (UMass) took a dramatic turn on Sunday when two players, Gia Girman of Rutgers and Ashley Lamond of UMass, were involved in a physical altercation on the field.
The brawl resulted in both players being banned from their teams’ next two games.
The incident occurred just 10 minutes into the second half of the game in Amherst, Massachusetts.
Gia Girman, a forward for Rutgers, was called for a foul and was getting up from the ground when Ashley Lamond, a UMass forward, approached to retrieve the ball.
Tensions quickly escalated, and the two players began tussling, eventually throwing punches and pulling each other’s hair as they fell to the ground.
The fight only ended when their teammates intervened and pulled them apart.
The exact cause of the confrontation remains unclear, but both Girman and Lamond were immediately shown red cards, leading to their suspension for the next two games under National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) rules.
Despite the altercation, UMass secured a 1-0 victory over Rutgers, with senior midfielder Bella Recino scoring the winning goal in the final minutes of the match.
The game was further marred by four additional yellow cards, two issued to each team.
Rutgers later acknowledged the “scrap” in a brief statement about the 55th-minute incident, though neither team has provided an official comment as of Monday.
With both players facing suspensions, the teams will need to adjust their strategies in the upcoming games as they move forward from this contentious match.
Fortunately, the two teams are not scheduled to play each other again this season.
