Cooking for Kamala: Chefs and Celebrities Join Forces for a Unique Campaign Event

Kamala Harris’ campaign takes a culinary turn with the “Cooking for Kamala” livestream, featuring top chefs and food personalities demonstrating recipes, including her famous roast chicken.

Bollywood Fever: When was the last time a presidential candidate was known for her roast chicken recipe? The Kamala Harris-Tim Walz campaign is breaking the mold in numerous ways, from the candidates joining TikTok to organizing themed calls such as “Swifties for Harris” and “Comics for Kamala.”

On Thursday, more than 60 notable chefs and food world personalities will come together for a special “Cooking for Kamala” livestream, co-hosted by Padma Lakshmi and Joel McHale. The event will feature cooking demonstrations, including Harris’ famous roast chicken recipe, where lots of garlic is the key ingredient. Among the culinary stars joining the event are philanthropist and chef José Andrés and “Top Chef” judges Tom Colicchio and Gail Simmons.

The livestream, available at cookingforkamala.com, starts at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT and will run for 90 minutes.

“Every time I’ve been with Kamala, we talk about food,” Lakshmi shared with Variety, emphasizing the role that celebrities and chefs can play in an election. “We need every voice and to use every method we can, to get the word out that this is not the election to sit out at home. If having someone in the public eye tell you something means you’ll listen for the good of all of us, then great,” she added.

Lakshmi, a longtime friend and supporter of Harris, previously wrote about the vice president in the New York Times in 2020, describing her as someone she trusts deeply. “That she is female is a beacon of hope for all women in this country. The fact that she is a person of color would go a long way to healing some very deep wounds for many of us. Her election to this highest of offices in our land would also restore faith that our country is indeed a democracy,” Lakshmi said.

Congressman Eric Swalwell, one of the organizers of the event, highlighted how cooking with family and friends is central to who Harris is. After hosting “Comics for Kamala,” Swalwell wanted to create an interactive event where supporters could cook Harris’ favorite recipe alongside some of America’s top chefs. Thanks to the efforts of chefs Suzanne Goin, Susan Feniger, and Stuart O’Keefe, the event attracted renowned chefs from across the country.
