A dangerous social media trend called “ridgy popping” has emerged in Sydney, where teenagers risk their lives clinging to moving trains. Authorities are scrambling to stop the trend before tragedy strikes.
Sydney, Bollywood Fever: The kids are, indeed, not alright. A dangerous social media trend has emerged in Sydney, putting teenagers at serious risk as they cling to the sides of moving trains in a reckless new craze called “ridgy popping.”
This trend, which encourages participants to film themselves hanging from the back of trains, has caught the attention of rail authorities who are now urgently working to curb this hazardous activity before it leads to fatalities.

The T8 Macarthur Line has become a particular hotspot for these daredevils, who have found ways to access the exterior of older K-set trains by breaking into crew compartments.
In one alarming TikTok video, two girls were seen clinging to the back of a train between Revesby and Macarthur stations on their way to school.
The dangers of this trend became even more apparent when a teenage boy sustained multiple injuries while attempting the stunt between St Peters and Redfern.
He was rushed to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital for treatment.

Revesby Councillor David Walsh has called for an immediate end to this perilous behavior. “It’s obviously very dangerous; one mistake and you’re dead or seriously injured,” he warned.
The ease with which teenagers are accessing crew compartments without any tools has raised significant concerns for Transport NSW.

Lalita Stevenson, who witnessed the incident during her peak-hour commute, described the shocking scene. “I heard a really loud bang and looked out the window to see kids as young as eight hanging onto the outside of the moving train,” she recounted.
Transport for NSW is aware of the issue but acknowledges that there aren’t enough staff to monitor every train service.
In response, they have reinforced the carriage doors to deter the trend, although the doors cannot be entirely sealed off due to their role as emergency exits.
Authorities are now scrambling to put an end to this dangerous trend before it results in a tragic accident.
