David Zucker expressed reservations about the upcoming remake of “The Naked Gun,” highlighting his lack of involvement and concerns over the new team’s understanding of the genre. In a discussion with TMZ, Zucker, known for directing iconic comedies such as ‘Naked Gun’ and “Airplane!”, revealed his uncertainty about the remake featuring Liam Neeson and Pamela Anderson, noting that the production team has not contacted him.
Zucker mentioned that he, along with collaborators Pat Proft and Mike McManus, had pitched a script to Paramount in 2018, believing the studio was impressed with their ideas. However, he was surprised to learn that Paramount chose a different creative team, who did not seek his input or consider him for a cameo.
He commented on the complexity of creating spoof content, emphasizing that it is not straightforward and often advises against attempting it without proper expertise. Zucker also questioned the necessity of the remake, pointing out that newer audiences are already discovering classics like ‘Naked Gun,’ “Airplane!”, and “Top Secret!” on their own.
The announcement of the remake, which will star Neeson and Anderson and involve Lonely Island/’SNL’ alum Akiva Schaffer as co-writer and director, was recently made public. Despite the new developments, Zucker remains skeptical about the project’s potential success, unsure whether it will meet its mark or fail.
