South Carolina women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley voices her opinion on the WNBA Rookie of the Year race, favoring Angel Reese over Caitlin Clark at the midway point of the season.

Bollywood Fever: South Carolina women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley, whose opinion holds significant weight after leading the Gamecocks to an undefeated 2024 NCAA season, has shared her perspective on the heated WNBA Rookie of the Year race. The competition features Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark and Chicago Sky’s Angel Reese, both of whom have delivered outstanding performances this season.

In an interview with TMZ Sports on Saturday morning, Staley expressed her current preference for Reese. “They both are having great years. Don’t get me wrong,” Staley said. “If I had to pick a Rookie of the Year at this time … today, it’s Angel. Not a doubt. What she’s been able to do with the double-doubles.”

Staley was particularly impressed with Reese’s remarkable streak of 15 consecutive double-doubles, a WNBA record. “But listen, the season is halfway through, and Caitlin is coming,” she added, acknowledging Clark’s strong performances and potential to sway the decision in the latter half of the season.

Caitlin Clark, who received the most votes for the upcoming All-Star Game, has been exceptional with her playmaking abilities, ranking second in the WNBA with 7.8 assists per game. Meanwhile, Reese leads the league in rebounding, averaging 11.8 boards per game. Both players rank first and second in points per game among rookies, further highlighting their significant contributions to their respective teams.

Staley believes that team success could play a crucial role in determining the Rookie of the Year. As of now, both the Indiana Fever and Chicago Sky are on track to qualify for the playoffs if the season ended today, adding another layer of intrigue to the ongoing race.

With the season only halfway through, the battle for the WNBA Rookie of the Year remains fiercely contested. Both Clark and Reese have demonstrated remarkable talent and determination, making the second half of the season one to watch closely.
