“Deadpool & Wolverine” returns to No. 1 at the box office, grossing $18.3 million in its fifth weekend. New releases “Blink Twice” and “The Crow” struggle to find audiences.

Bollywood Fever: After a brief dip, “Deadpool & Wolverine” surged back to the top of the box office charts in its fifth weekend, dominating the competition with $18.3 million from 3,840 locations.

The Marvel superhero adventure, starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, has now amassed a massive $577.2 million in North America and $1.21 billion globally, making it the second-highest-grossing film of the year, just behind “Inside Out 2” ($1.64 billion).

Meanwhile, two new releases, “Blink Twice” and “The Crow”, faltered in their debuts. “Blink Twice”, directed by Zoe Kravitz and starring Channing Tatum, led the newcomers but could only muster $7.3 million from 3,067 theaters, placing fourth.

The film’s international performance also lagged, bringing in $6.7 million from 73 territories for a global start of $14 million.

"Blink Twice" Outpaces "The Crow" at a Sluggish Summer Box Office Weekend

Despite a decent critical reception (79% on Rotten Tomatoes), the R-rated psychological thriller struggled to connect with a broader audience.

“The Crow”, a reboot of the 1994 cult classic, performed even worse, opening in eighth place with just $4.6 million from 2,752 theaters.

The R-rated film, starring Bill Skarsgård as a vengeful resurrected musician, failed to impress critics or audiences, earning a 20% score on Rotten Tomatoes and a “B-” CinemaScore.

With a production budget of $50 million, the film’s poor performance is a significant blow to Lionsgate, which also struggled with the recent flop “Borderlands”.

Last weekend’s box office leader, “Alien: Romulus”, dropped to second place, earning $16.2 million in its second weekend, a 62% decline from its opening.

The sci-fi horror sequel has accumulated $72.6 million domestically and $225 million worldwide.

In third place, the romantic drama “It Ends With Us”, based on Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel, continued its strong run with $11.8 million from 3,839 venues.

The film has now grossed $120.8 million in North America and $240 million globally after three weekends.

Rounding out the top five was the faith-based drama “The Forge”, which earned $6.6 million from 1,818 locations.

The film, a spinoff of the 2015 hit “War Room”, has been well-received by audiences, earning an “A+” CinemaScore. With a modest $5 million production budget, “The Forge” is expected to perform well as it continues its run.

Overall, it was the third-lowest grossing weekend of the summer, with total revenues across all films reaching $94 million.

The domestic box office remains 13.8% behind 2023 and 25.8% behind 2019, the last pre-COVID year.

However, industry analysts are hopeful that upcoming releases like “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” in early September will help revive theater attendance.
