Sanjay Leela Bhansali explains why Deepika Padukone and Alia Bhatt can’t be compared as performers.
Ace filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali needs no introduction, thanks to his amazing body of work.
The director is known for his blockbuster movies such as ‘Bajirao Mastani’, ‘Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram Leela’, and ‘Padmaavat’ to name a few.
Bhansali is currently basking in the success of his latest release, Gangubai Kathiawadi, which is smashing records at the Box Office.
The director has worked with both Deepika Padukone and Alia Bhatt but when it comes to choosing between them, Bhansali has his fair reasons why they both can’t be compared as performers.
While speaking to Bollywood Hungama, one fan asked Bhansali about Deepika and Alia, and how they are different from a filmmaker’s perspective.

Bhansali stated, “They are different people. Both have different approaches, they have different heights.
They have different voices, they have different body language. They have different approaches to cinema.
All that put together… Deepika is a beautiful girl, a wonderful actor.
For me, Alia is a very beautiful girl, again a wonderful actor.
But if I have to do Bajirao Mastani then I will have to have Deepika, and if I’m doing Gangubai, I will have to have Alia play it.

He added that whatever roles he had chosen for Alia and Deepika, were based on ‘right casting’ and not on who could have played it better.
“Not that in the same breath I can say that Alia could not have played Mastani or Deepika could not have played Gangu.
But I feel what casting I’ve done, keeping their essence, is the right casting.
So, what Alia did for this role, only Alia could have done. And what Deepika did in those roles only Deepika could have done,” Bhansali further explained.
For the unversed, Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Deepika had worked together on films–Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela, Bajirao Mastani, and Padmaavat. ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ marked Bhansali’s first collaboration with Alia Bhatt.
Also starring Ajay Devgn, the film was released in theatres on 25th January.
