Colorado head coach Deion Sanders remains unfazed by media criticism as he bans a columnist from asking questions, focusing instead on his upcoming season opener against North Dakota State.
Bollywood Fever: Colorado head coach Deion Sanders has once again become a central figure in the college football world, this time due to a controversy involving the media.
The issue arose after Sanders’ program banned Denver Post columnist Sean Keeler from asking him questions, following what the outlet described as a “series of sustained, personal attacks” on Sanders and the Colorado football program.
While this move has sparked criticism from fans and media members alike, Sanders remains seemingly unbothered by the backlash.
During a media session on Saturday, August 24, Sanders was asked whether the external noise affects him.
Despite the widespread belief that the recent incidents may have influenced his stance, Sanders made it clear that he remains focused on his goals.
“You don’t care because it don’t influence you,” Sanders stated. “I’ve never read an article or a comment and said, ‘Oh, that’s gonna make me go harder.’ I’m gonna go hard regardless, but that comment just allowed me to know where you stand. So that’s the only differential of the thing. It doesn’t propel me. Where I came from propelled me. How I grew up propelled me. Like you know, being an African American, one of few that’s a head coach in college football, that kind of stuff propels me. It’s not what you say. That lets me know where you stand.”
The controversy surrounding Sanders’ relationship with the media has seen two significant incidents this month.
On August 9, Sanders had a tense interaction with a local CBS reporter during his birthday press conference, refusing to answer a question about the reporter allegedly doing something “foul.”
ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith later revealed that Sanders was upset over CBS’s decision to remove an African American reporter from a story about him, replacing him with a white reporter after the information had been gathered.
Following this incident, Sanders extended an olive branch by offering the local reporter a one-on-one interview after an open practice on August 16.
However, his situation with Sean Keeler remains unresolved.
Although Keeler is permitted to attend Colorado events, he has been indefinitely barred from asking Sanders any questions.
Despite these media tensions, Sanders and the Colorado Buffaloes are set to open their season on Thursday against North Dakota State.
As the team prepares for their first game, Sanders appears resolute, focusing on his responsibilities as a head coach and the challenges ahead in the new season.
