Michigan State Police reported that no suspects were in custody and they were assisting Detroit police with the investigation. Preliminary information indicated that two people died and 19 others sustained “various injuries.”
The incident occurred on a residential block on Detroit’s east side. Detroit police confirmed the fatalities but did not provide specifics on the number of injured or the circumstances surrounding the shooting. “At this time, investigators and forensic personnel are analyzing all available evidence and will be continuing their work through the weekend,” police said in a Sunday statement.
Police Chief James White and Mayor Mike Duggan are expected to detail a “comprehensive new strategy regarding block parties” during a Monday news conference.
Detroit Police Cpl. Dan Donakowski, a department spokesman, declined further comment. John Roach, a spokesman for Mayor Duggan, stated that the mayor would address “block club party safety strategy” at the news conference but did not comment on the shooting itself.
