Diego Simeone condemns fans who threw objects during Atletico Madrid’s derby against Real Madrid, calling for sanctions on both supporters and players who provoke such incidents.
BollywoodFever: Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone expressed his condemnation of fans who threw objects onto the pitch during Sunday’s derby against Real Madrid, which resulted in a 20-minute suspension of the match. Simeone also called for sanctions on players who, he suggested, may have provoked such behavior.
The incident occurred after Real Madrid’s Eder Militao scored in the 64th minute. While Real players celebrated, Atletico ultras from the south stand, Fondo Sur, hurled objects toward Real goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. Courtois alerted the referee, leading to the temporary suspension of the match. Despite the disruption, Atletico managed to equalize with a late goal from Angel Correa, and the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
Speaking to DAZN after the match, Simeone stressed the need for accountability on both sides. “Those responsible for the incidents should be sanctioned by the club. We don’t need these people. They harm the club, but this does not justify the situations we, the protagonists, generate,” he said, referring to players potentially inciting fan reactions.
Simeone also commented on player conduct, stating that while throwing objects is unacceptable, provocations from players can also fuel such incidents. “We have to stay calm and celebrate goals without provoking fans by making gestures or staring at the stands. If you provoke, people get angry,” he added.
Atletico Madrid released a statement early Monday, announcing they had already identified one of the culprits and were working with the police to locate others involved. The club emphasized that such behavior “has no place in football” and assured that strict disciplinary measures would be applied.
The club also highlighted that the majority of the 70,000 fans at the stadium exhibited exemplary behavior, but the actions of a few tarnished the image of the event.
