With Tua Tagovailoa’s return uncertain, should the Miami Dolphins explore a trade for Jacoby Brissett before the NFL trade deadline? A deeper look at the team’s QB dilemma.
NFL News, BollywoodFever: The Miami Dolphins’ offense, struggling for consistency, enjoyed a brief respite during their Week 6 bye, but the underlying issues haven’t gone away. With Tua Tagovailoa still on injured reserve and no clear timeline for his return, the Dolphins are left navigating the upcoming games with backup Tyler Huntley at the helm as they prepare for their Week 7 matchup against the Indianapolis Colts.
Huntley has replaced Skylar Thompson as the temporary starter, but his performance has raised concerns. Neither backup has come close to replicating the level of play set by Tagovailoa during his strong 2024 season debut against the Seattle Seahawks. As the Dolphins near the end of Tagovailoa’s mandatory four-game IR stint, the question remains: Will their star quarterback return for Week 8 against the Arizona Cardinals, or will his recovery take longer?
Head coach Mike McDaniel expressed hope that Tagovailoa would play again this season but refrained from providing a specific timeline for his return. The team can initiate Tagovailoa’s 21-day practice window soon, which could have him back by Week 10 against the Los Angeles Rams. However, if his recovery from a third confirmed concussion isn’t progressing as expected, he may face another stint on IR.
With the November 5 trade deadline approaching, the Dolphins must assess their options under center. One potential solution arose last week when the New England Patriots benched Jacoby Brissett in favor of rookie QB Drake Maye. Brissett, who started New England’s first five games, is a seasoned veteran with 53 career starts and could provide the Dolphins with a reliable backup.
While Brissett’s career record of 19-34 isn’t dazzling, he’s a capable quarterback who could stabilize Miami’s offense until Tagovailoa’s return. More importantly, at 32 years old and on a one-year, $8 million contract, Brissett represents a reasonable short-term solution without requiring a long-term financial commitment from the Dolphins.
Given Tagovailoa’s injury history, the Dolphins can’t afford to take risks with their quarterback depth. They’ve built a formidable offense, but it’s currently held together by the uncertainty surrounding their $212.4 million QB. A mid-season trade for Brissett could provide the Dolphins with insurance at a crucial time, offering them the flexibility to manage Tagovailoa’s recovery without rushing him back into action.
The Dolphins may not want to invest heavily in a backup QB beyond this season, but Brissett’s experience and affordability make him a practical option for Miami’s playoff aspirations and beyond.
