A Spanish prosecutor has asked for more than eight years in prison for Colombian superstar Shakira and a fine of more than 23 million euros ($23.51 million) in a 14.5 million euro tax fraud case, Spanish newspaper El Pais reported on Friday.

Prosecutors and Shakira’s representatives were not immediately available for comment.

The pop star this week rejected an offer by prosecutors to drop a fraud case in which she is accused of failing to pay taxes between 2012 and 2014, a period Shakira says she did not live in Spain.

Latin American superstar Shakira has rejected a settlement offered by prosecutors in her €14.5 million Spanish tax fraud case and is now one step closer to a trial, her media team said on Wednesday.

The Colombian singer – who has sold more than 80 million records worldwide with hits such as “Hips Don’t Lie” – has always met all her tax obligations, the statement said. She considers the case a “total violation of her rights,” she said.

“The singer is fully convinced of her innocence and therefore does not accept the settlement,” the statement said.

Terms of the proposed settlement were not disclosed.

The prosecutor’s office in Barcelona did not respond to a request for comment.

Shakira is accused of failing to pay 14.5 million euros ($14.7 million) in tax income between 2012 and 2014, a period Shakira’s representatives say she did not live in Spain.

An earlier Spanish court rejected an appeal by Colombian singer Shakira, ratifying a previous ruling that contained “sufficient evidence” to put her on trial for alleged tax fraud, a court document showed on Thursday.

Prosecutors say the “Hips Don’t Lie” singer failed to pay up to 14.5 million euros ($15.54 million) in taxes on income earned between 2012 and 2014.

They claim that Shakira lived in Spain’s northern region of Catalonia during those years, although representatives for the Colombian pop star said she only moved to Spain in 2015, where she has since fulfilled all her tax obligations.

The new decision is a ratification of a previous court decision issued in July 2021.

The court has yet to formally send her to court and set a date.

Her legal team said in a statement Thursday that they will continue to defend her case with solid legal arguments.

“Shakira’s conduct in tax matters has always been impeccable in all countries where she has had to pay taxes, and she has trusted and faithfully followed the recommendations of the best specialists and advisers,” the statement said.
