Eric Hovde’s Wife Takes Center Stage in Senate Campaign

Sharon Hovde, wife of U.S. Senate candidate Eric Hovde, directly addresses Democratic Senator Tammy Baldwin’s attack ads in a new television spot, defending her husband and sharing her personal experience as a former single mother.

Bollywood Fever: In a closely watched Senate race, Sharon Hovde, the wife of Republican U.S. Senate candidate Eric Hovde, has taken a prominent role in her husband’s campaign, launching a direct response to Democratic Senator Tammy Baldwin’s attack ads.

This strategic move comes after Eric Hovde secured the Republican nomination, setting the stage for a heated battle in Wisconsin, a key battleground state.

Sharon Hovde appears front and center in the latest campaign ad released Thursday, where she defends her husband against criticism over comments he made about single mothers during his 2012 Senate run.

The ad marks a personal turn in the campaign, as it follows a series of spots featuring Sharon discussing Eric’s charity work and his ongoing battle with multiple sclerosis.

The controversy stems from remarks Eric Hovde made in 2012, where he suggested that being a single mother could lead to a life of poverty and associated social issues, including higher drug rates, health problems, and incarceration rates among young men.

Baldwin’s campaign capitalized on these comments in an ad featuring children of single parents, with one participant questioning, “What is wrong with this guy?”

Rather than disputing her husband’s past statements, Sharon Hovde shifts the focus to Baldwin in her response ad. “Sen.

Baldwin, your dirty campaign has gone too far,” Sharon Hovde says. “Your latest attack on my husband is about single mothers? I was a single mom when I met Eric. It was hard. Eric saw the difficulty I faced just trying to afford child care.”

Sharon, who was separated from her first husband when she met Eric, shares that her daughter was three years old at the time.

The couple now has another daughter together.

Baldwin’s campaign, standing by their ad, argued that Eric Hovde’s words “speak for themselves,” adding that his past comments are indicative of his broader pattern of disrespect toward various groups, including seniors, farmers, and those struggling with their weight.

Political experts note that it is uncommon for a candidate’s spouse to take such an active role in campaign messaging. Kelly Dittmar, director of research at the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University, explains that when spouses do take on such roles, it is often to address a perceived weakness or criticism of the candidate.

Dittmar also highlighted that male candidates running against female opponents may strategically use women in their lives to deliver attacks, aiming to sidestep potential backlash for directly criticizing a female opponent.

As the race between Baldwin, a two-term incumbent, and Hovde, a millionaire businessman, heats up, both campaigns are expected to intensify their efforts, making Wisconsin one of the most closely scrutinized Senate races this election cycle.
