His professional career spanned eight seasons, during which he played for the Boston Celtics, Dallas Mavericks, New Jersey Nets, Philadelphia 76ers, Detroit Pistons, and Toronto Raptors.
The family’s statement released by UNC reads, “The family of Eric Montross (Laura, Sarah, Andrew, and Megan) is announcing that he passed away on Sunday, December 17, surrounded by loved ones at his home in Chapel Hill.” Eric faced his cancer diagnosis in March 2023, and his family expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support and love he received during his courageous battle.

Following his retirement in 2003, Eric transitioned to providing color commentary for Tar Heels basketball games, contributing his insights and passion for the sport.
