New car sales in the EU rose 4.3% in June, reaching their highest level since July 2019. Despite this, battery electric vehicle (EV) registrations fell marginally.

Bollywood Fever: New car sales in the European Union increased by 4.3% in June, hitting their highest level since July 2019. This growth was driven by significant upticks in major markets like Italy, Germany, and Spain, according to data released by the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) on Thursday.

Despite the overall increase in car sales, registrations of battery electric vehicles (EVs) saw a slight decline. The ACEA reported that while battery electric car registrations surged by 50.4% in Belgium and 117.4% in Italy, these gains were overshadowed by double-digit declines in Germany, the Netherlands, and France.

Top European carmakers remain optimistic about car sales improving throughout the year, despite a cooling in EV demand after several years of robust growth. This optimism persists even amid warnings of challenging global market conditions.

The ACEA data showed a 1% annual decline in battery electric car sales and a 19.9% drop in plug-in hybrid car sales in June within the EU. However, sales of hybrid-electric cars grew by 26.4%. For the first six months of the year, battery electric car registrations rose by 1.3%.

In June, EVs (comprising fully electric, plug-in hybrids, or full hybrids) accounted for 50% of all new passenger car registrations in the EU, up from 47.5% a year earlier.

Car registrations for Europe’s three largest carmakers—Volkswagen, Stellantis, and Renault—grew by 4.7%, 0.4%, and 6.2%, respectively, in June.

Germany, the EU’s largest EV market, ended subsidies for buying EVs in December as part of a last-minute 2024 budget deal. Lucien Mathieu, cars director at the European campaign group Transport & Environment (T&E), commented on Germany’s declining EV market, saying, “Germany is the sick man of Europe when it comes to electric cars.” He emphasized that markets with predictable incentives for EV adoption are “reaping the rewards.”
