A bakery explosion in La Vega, Dominican Republic, captured on surveillance camera, leaves multiple injured. The blast, caused by accumulated gas, also damaged a nearby dental clinic.
Dominican Republic, Bollywood Fever: A surveillance camera captured the harrowing moment an explosion destroyed a bakery in La Vega, a city in the north-central Dominican Republic.
The footage shows a woman standing near the bakery’s entrance and a vehicle passing by when a blast rocks the shop on Thursday morning. The explosion, caused by gas accumulating inside an oven, shattered the bakery’s window, scattering a metal pole and shards of glass onto the street.
The blast’s impact blew open the doors of a neighboring dental clinic, prompting the frightened woman to run inside for safety. Six men then rushed out of the bakery, and a bystander quickly assisted an injured individual by removing his tank top.
La Vega Fire Department colonel general César Abreu confirmed to Noticias SIN that the explosion was due to gas buildup inside the oven. The powerful blast also caused the ceiling to collapse in one of the clinic’s offices, where a patient was undergoing treatment. Fortunately, both the dentist and the patient were unharmed.
One of the injured employees, Julio RuÃz, who was standing by the oven baking bread, suffered burns on at least 55 percent of his body, according to Dr. Francisco Ulerio. Bakery workers Cristofer Felipe, 27, and his uncle Dany Núñez also sustained burns covering 20 to 55 percent of their bodies.
“Let’s hope that there really is nothing to regret except that lives are fine, apart from the issue of the burn,” Felipe’s aunt, JazmÃn Felipe, said. “But it was a very difficult moment for everyone.”
Carlos RodrÃguez, 35, and a five-year-old girl were treated for minor injuries. A fireman, whose name was not released, was also treated for smoke inhalation and third-degree burns.
Noticias SIN reported that one of the victims was transferred to a hospital 80 miles away in Santo Domingo, the Dominican capital.
