Ezequiel Tovar’s Homer Lifts Rockies Over Giants in 4-3 Victory

Bollywood Fever: Ezequiel Tovar homered for the third consecutive game, hitting a tie-breaking two-run drive in the fifth inning, leading the Colorado Rockies to a 4-3 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Saturday night.

Kyle Freeland (2-3) delivered a solid performance, going six innings and allowing three runs—two earned—on five hits. This marked his fifth consecutive quality start since being reinstated from the injured list on June 23, after missing two months due to a left elbow strain. Freeland struck out four and walked one, securing back-to-back wins for the first time this season.

For the Giants, Tyler Fitzgerald, batting ninth, doubled and homered, driving in two runs. Wilmer Flores added a run-scoring double after Matt Chapman reached on shortstop Tovar’s fielding error in the sixth inning.

Logan Webb, coming off his worst start of the season, kept the Rockies at bay until the fifth inning. Webb (7-8) had previously allowed seven runs in five innings in a loss to Toronto on July 10. He went six innings against the Rockies, allowing four runs on eight hits, while walking four and striking out four.

Fitzgerald homered off Freeland in the third inning and doubled home Mike Yastrzemski, who had tripled, in the fifth.

Nick Mears pitched two hitless innings in relief, striking out four in a row at the start, and Victor Vodnik pitched a hitless ninth for his third save.

Team Notes:

Giants: LHP Robbie Ray impressed in his latest rehab outing, with manager Bob Melvin indicating there’s a “good chance” Ray could debut for the Giants during their upcoming four-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers starting Monday. Ray, the 2021 AL Cy Young Award winner, was acquired in an offseason trade with Seattle and is aiming for his first appearance since undergoing elbow surgery in May 2023. In his recent Triple-A Sacramento outing, Ray pitched 5 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing one hit, striking out seven, and walking two.

Rockies: C Elías Díaz left the game with right calf tightness, replaced by C Jacob Stallings in the third inning. INF-OF Kris Bryant is continuing his rehab, making his second start as a designated hitter for Triple-A Albuquerque on Saturday after an 0-3 performance on Friday. Bryant, sidelined by a left rib contusion since early June, is expected to play again on Sunday and could rejoin the Rockies next week following re-evaluation.

In the series finale on Sunday, Rockies LHP Ryan Feltner (1-9, 5.36 ERA) will attempt to break an eight-game losing streak against Giants RHP Hayden Birdsong (1-0, 3.72 ERA).
